Life vs. hip

I got kicked out of PT today. When my PT asked me what I was doing for exercise, I rattled off the list of my average weekend activities – long walks, pulling the bike trailer, swimming, more walking, picking fruit, general kid chasing. He asked how much running I was doing and I said not much, because I’m too busy doing all that other stuff. He rolled his eyes, and I knew it was over between us.

I’m officially done. My hip is probably about 90%, which is pretty great for 4 months post op. My range of motion is my major complaint now, but it’s improving every day. While he worked on my hip today, the PT noted that my joint is more “springy” – the end of my range of motion is more like a padded room than a brick wall now. I’m suddenly feeling that in the push and pull between life versus hip, life is definitely winning.

He left me with some good advice on exercise, rehab, and shoes, and gave me the green light to email or make an appointment if I ever felt like I needed some extra help during the rest of my recovery. But I’m released into the wild.

This certainly isn’t the end of this blog, or the end of my recovery. That 10% I still have to go is going to take a long time and a lot of hard work. But I’m definitely in a new phase of recovery – yes, I’ll still do my exercises every day, but I’m strong enough and fit enough now that my normal life *is* my therapy.
