Upswing

I finally feel like I’m getting my feet under me, literally and metaphorically. I’ve had some pretty low moments the last week or two, as I felt like I wasn’t progressing at all. Combine that with the general frustration of not being able to do the things I’m used to, and I was not a happy camper. Plus my office is being renovated and we’re playing musical chairs, so I’m a work nomad for the next many weeks. Normally not a big deal, but just another normally stable situation that’s been taken out of my control. Add to it a fast and furious stomach bug, and this week is definitely not what I planned.

But this morning was bright and sunny, the kids were playing together nicely, my stomach bug had left, and it was time to hit the gym. Even better, as I headed out, The Supportive Husband complimented me on my gait, which just in the past day or so has become noticeably less limpy. It is like a switch has flipped – my hip feels much more stable. My surgical site doesn’t hurt as much either – I actually can lie on my right side in bed now for limited amounts of time. It’s a good reminder that healing takes time. If my (relatively minor) incisions are still healing, then of course the actual location of the surgery is.

I was one of the first people through the door when the gym opened, and hopped on my favorite bike. Headphones on, I pedaled and pedaled, and actually got up to a pretty good speed, without having to constantly think about my hip, and keep the angle of my stroke just so. I worked up a good sweat, and my legs actually felt energized, not jellied, when I was done. I walked on the treadmill for a few minutes, reaching a top speed of 2.3 mph. Then I lifted, did some crunches, and headed home. I feel great. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. For the first time in weeks, I feel like I’m headed in the right direction.
